Debate
In this working method, a formal debate
replaces the usual discussion. The subject at issue is explored from
pre-formulated standpoints, with a number of extra ingredients supplementing
the classical rules of debate. Participants are divided into opposing teams,
those for and those against a given standpoint, irrespective of each
participant's actual views on the issue in question. Each group prepares
arguments for its case and these are presented, contested and embraced over a
number of rounds. There are two given moments when participants must
demonstrate their allegiance, and it is quite allowable to change sides. Every
round has a strict time limit. Participants are also invited to express their
admiration for a particular contribution to the debate, even if it is for a
point of view they do not share! Chairpersons lead the debate strictly and
fairly, with energy and, of course, wit.
A debate provides:
- enjoyable conversations instead of awkward discussions
- an exchange of arguments, independent of personal convictions
- proponents and opponents are heard equally, and all are in a
position to frame and present their arguments
- the focus is on the quality of the argument, not on 'winning'
- conversation is not limited to those who 'usually do all the talking'
